If you are in Patong this week, this is the update that matters most. The cleanup from Monday's flash floods and landslides is still going on, the bill is already enormous, and forecasters say the island is not out of the weather yet.

A preliminary estimate put the damage in Patong at around B100 million. Homes, shops and small businesses were hit by mud, rocks and water, with the Soi Nanai 5 to 8 area among the worst affected — bars, massage shops and tattoo studios there were damaged, along with cars and motorbikes belonging to residents and visitors. Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee, who visited Patong and Kamala, criticised warning systems and drainage that have not kept pace with the island's growth, and called for faster recovery work, clear compensation rules that include tenants, checks on waterways and structures blocking drainage, and a long-term plan for hillside development.

The practical picture today: Nanai Road was closed for cleaning on Oct 27, with work expected to finish by mid-afternoon. Disaster-affected areas have been declared, first in Kathu and Patong and then across three districts, which unlocks emergency relief funding, and Patong Municipality has been distributing food relief. Mercifully, no deaths or injuries had been reported from these landslides and floods.

Please take the continuing warning seriously: heavy rain, flash flooding, runoff, landslides and strong winds and waves are possible through Wednesday, Oct 28. Avoid flooded routes and slopes prone to rockfalls, move vehicles to safer ground, and stay out of the sea during strong wind and high waves.
